| Chambliss strikes out 15 as the Noles
win again |
by Drew Hankin
|
|
The doubters about Tyler Chambliss' move
from closer to starter can now leave the building. Chambliss' fifteen
strikeout, complete game win on Saturday night at Howser Stadium ought
to be enough to put that debate to rest. The junior's one hundred
twenty-three pitch performance was the most strikeouts by a single
Seminole pitcher since April 26, 1997, when Randy Choate fanned fifteen
Maryland batters as well.
Chambliss allowed just two runs on sevens hits and just two walks in
Florida State's first complete game since Bryan Henry had one against
Auburn in last season's Regionals.
The Terrapins drew first blood in the top of the first inning on a
single, a sacrifice bunt, and a questionable double down the right field
line that looked awfully foul.
The Noles answered back an inning later and took the lead with two runs
in the bottom of the second. Third baseman Ryne Malone reached on a bunt
towards third base, and moved to second on a single to left by shortstop
Buster Posey. After a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Tony Thomas Jr
moved both runners up, catcher Danny Diaz grounded out to bring home one
run. A single by designated hitter Tommy Oravetz then brought home Posey
and gave the Tribe a 2-1 lead.
FSU added another run in the third inning when centerfielder Shane
Robinson led off with a double to right-center, moved to third on a
groundout, and scored on a Dennis Guinn base hit to center. That marked
the fourteenth straight game that Guinn has had an RBI.
After Maryland picked up their second run of the game in the sixth
inning, the Seminoles answered back with two more in the next frame.
Thomas led off with a single up the middle, stole second, and scored
when Oravetz reached second on an error. After Robinson singled Oravetz
over to third, a single up the middle by right fielder Jack Rye brought
home the fifth run of the game for Florida State in Josh Spivey who was
pinch-running for Oravetz.
The Seminoles scored the final run of the game in the next inning when
Thomas reached on a bunt and went to second on an error, before scoring
on a single to center by Diaz.
Florida State is now 16-1, 2-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, and
has now won fourteen straight games. The Terps fell to 6-9 overall, and
2-3 in league play. The Tribe will go for the sweep on Sunday at noon,
with Michael Hyde (3-0, 4.05) on the mound. The game will be broadcast
live on Sun Sports.
