| Jacksonville trips up Florida State |
by FSU Sports Info.
|
Streaks are made to be broken and on
Wednesday night it happened inside Dick Howser Stadium. Jacksonville
(25-24) scored three runs in the top of the eighth and held on to upset
third-ranked Florida State (40-8) 7-6. The loss snapped the Seminoles'
25-game win streak over the Dolphins at home as the last JU victory in
Tallahassee came on May 1, 1991. Florida State fell to 11-3 in one-run
games following Wednesday night's defeat.
"Well, it was a ballgame that undoubtedly we played tired," said head
coach Mike Martin. "It was one of those games that we were definitely
outplayed. You have to give Jacksonville a lot of credit. They made the
plays when they had to. We just didn't play the kind of baseball that we
have played. But it was like I told the guys, if they played the next 48
ball games 40-8, I'll take 80-16."
Florida State trailed by as many as four after the first three innings
as the Dolphins scored three in the second and then capitalized on a
Seminole error in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Catcher Brad Simmons
gave Jacksonville its first lead of the game on a two-run blast over the
fence in right for his second round tripper of the season. Thomas Myers
would add a third run in the second scoring on a wild pitch by FSU
starter Mike McGee after reaching base on a walk.
In the third, the Dolphins took a 4-0 lead taking advantage of the first
Seminole error the game.
The lead was quickly erased as the Seminoles battled back with a run in
the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Jack Rye
registered the first FSU run of the game with an RBI single to right
scoring Jason Stidham who reached on an infield single to second.
Tyler Holt cut the deficit to one with a two-run single in the fifth.
With one out, Ohmed Danesh laced a single to right center and moved to
third on a single to left by Stuart Tapley. Tapley took second on the
play as the throw from left field went to third. One batter later, Holt
knocked a single back up the middle scoring Danesh and Tapley to make
the score 4-3 in favor of Jacksonville. The base hit extended Holt's
streak of reaching base to all 48 games.
Both starting pitchers would leave with a no decision after five innings
of work. McGee allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits. He walked
four and struck out three. JU's Carson Andrew gave up three run on five
hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
John Gast posted career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts as the
freshman southpaw worked two scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and
a walk while striking out four.
The Seminoles grabbed their first lead of the ball game with two runs in
the sixth to take a 5-4 advantage. Dennis Guinn and Tony Delmonico led
off the inning with back-to-back hits. Guinn reached on an infield
single to short and moved to third as Delmonico laced a single down the
left field line. The throw from left fielder Kyle Fleming bounded off
the glove of Dolphin second baseman Tony Bernazard allowing enough time
for Guinn to score and Delmonico to advance to second. Two batters later
Danesh came through with a triple to left center plating Delmonico for a
one-run lead.
Jacksonville would counter with three runs in the eighth to take the
lead for good. Bernazard singled up the middle off reliever Jimmy
Marshall and with Kevin Ferreira at the plate successfully stole second
and came around to score on back-to-back throwing errors. Bernazard
moved to third as the throw from Buster Posey short hopped Stidham at
second and trickled into center field. Tyler Holt, backing up on the
play, came up firing to third but the ball kicked off the foot of
Bernazard and went into the Dolphin dugout allowing him to score.
After a strikeout of Ferreira, Marshall issued three straight walks
before Martin went to the pen bringing on Ryan Strauss. On the first
batter that he faced, the senior right hander gave up a single to
Simmons plating Matt Lopez and Matt Dobbins as Jacksonville reclaimed
the lead at 7-5.
Simmons finished the game 3-for-3 with two walks. He collected four RBIs
on a pair of singles and a home run.
FSU came within one of the lead in the eighth as Delmonico scored on a
sacrifice fly off the bat of Tapley.
The Seminoles would get a runner on in the ninth as Stidham led off the
inning with a single to left. Matt Loosen entered and got the final
three outs on a double play groundout and a fly out to left for his
second save of the season.
"Let's give Jacksonville a lot of credit," added Martin. "They deserved
to win the game. They got it done with the game on the line. We did some
things that were uncharacteristic but maybe they made us do things that
were uncharacteristic. I take my hat off to Terry Alexander and the
Dolphins. They did a good job."
Jacksonville's Tim Brown got the win improving to 3-4 on the year. Brown
worked 2.2 innings allowing just one run on two hits. He walked three
and struck out one. Marshall was credited with the loss falling to 4-2.
Danesh, Stidham and Delmonico each finished with two hits, while Holt
led the team with two RBIs.
Florida State will continue its current home stand with four games
against Savannah State beginning Friday, May 9 at 6:00 pm. Fans can
watch Friday and Sunday's game live over the internet on ACC Select
