| Noles rout the Hatters |
by FSU Sports Info
|
Florida State (21-2) swept a two-game series
from Stetson (11-13) with a 19-3 victory Wednesday night on Mike Martin
Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles extended their win
streak to nine straight games over the Hatters as the Garnet and Gold
set a season-high for runs scored eclipsing the previous mark of 18 set
last Sunday against Virginia Tech. Florida State’s 19 runs were the most
scored in the series since a 21-12 victory by the Seminoles back on
March 24, 1959.
FSU batted around in both the second and third innings outscoring the
Hatters 13-0 as the Seminoles sent a combined 23 batters to the plate.
Freshman Mike McGee went 3-for-4 with a home run and two singles while
setting a career-high with six RBIs. He is the first Seminole to drive
in six runs this year and the first since Jack Rye matched the feat back
on February 27, 2007 against North Florida.
“I really saw the ball well tonight,” said McGee. “On the home run, he
(Nick Bohne) left a curveball hanging. He threw one earlier in the count
and it fooled me. I didn’t think I hit that one pitch out, I got it off
the handle so I guess I got a little help from the wind.”
Tyler Holt reached base in all four plate appearances as he hit a
two-run home run in the second inning for his only hit of the night. He
also walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored three runs.
“I’ve been struggling a little bit at the plate so it was nice to come
away with a couple walks tonight,” added Holt. “On that hit, I’ve been
working with Mike Martin, Jr. a lot, so it meant a lot to me to be able
to get a good rip on a pitch and hit it out.”
Senior Dennis Guinn continued his hot hitting as he went 2-for-3 with
two runs and an RBI. Tony Delmonico tied a season-high with four runs as
the junior shortstop went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. Jack Posey and
Jack Rye each collected two hits and an RBI.
Bo O’Dell moved his record to 3-1 on the year as he blanked the Hatters
over five innings of work. The junior right hander gave up just two hits
and didn’t face more than four hitters in any inning. He tied a
career-high with five strikeouts while not issuing a free pass. O’Dell
is now 5-2 as a starter and has walked no more than one batter in 17
career games.
“I felt good,” explained O’Dell. “I was spotting my fastball which is
really important. My breaking stuff was on tonight; basically I was
throwing all five pitches fairly well. It was an overall good outing for
me.”
Stephen Cardullo entered the game in the fourth inning and collected two
RBIs on a sacrifice fly and a single through the right side in the
sixth. Ryan Strauss made his first plate appearance since the 2006
season and went 1-for-2 with an RBI. He also relieved Rye in right field
in the top of the sixth. Nick Vickerson, Tommy Oravetz and Luke
Smierciak each registered a hit in the win.
Ryan Vigue, Trent Jarvis and Ben Francis all worked out of the bullpen
on Wednesday night. Vigue pitched a career-high two innings as he
allowed two hits and struck out three batters.
“It’s always fun to get everyone in the game,” said head coach Mike
Martin. “We got every player in plus a few pitchers. We had Ryan Strauss
in right field the last four innings, so it was a very satisfying win.”
Florida State will hit the road for its second conference road trip of
the season as they head to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face Wake Forest for a
three-game set. First pitch for Friday’s game is set for 3:00 pm, while
all three games can be seen on ACC Select. Gametracker will be available
for the contest and fans can always listen to the action on 1270 the
Team with Eric Luallen providing all the play-by-play action.
