Fifth-ranked Florida State (36-12, 16-8 ACC) tied a season-high hitting
four home runs in game two to defeat Boston College (27-22, 13-14 ACC)
11-6 to sweep a doubleheader on Sunday at Shea Field.
With the two wins, Florida State remained perfect on Sunday’s this year
moving to 13-0, while the Seminoles improved to 9-3 on the road in
league play this year claiming their fourth road series of the season in
the ACC.
James Ramsey led the Noles with three RBI finishing game two 1-for-1
with a home run, two runs scored, a sac-fly, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
Eight of the nine players in the starting line-up registered a hit,
while Stephen Cardullo and Mike McGee had two hits a piece. Tyler Holt,
Cardullo and McGee each drove in two runs in the win.
Holt, Cardullo, McGee and Ramsey accounted for the four Seminole home
runs in the doubleheader sweep.
Scott Sitz worked 6.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits as he
walked one and struck out four as the freshman right hander improved to
5-0 on the year.
Geoff Parker threw the final 2.2 innings to earn his first save of the
season. The junior right hander faced the minimum in his second outing
of the afternoon as he allowed no runs on just one hit as he struck out
two and did not issue a walk.
Florida State ran out to the early lead in game two of the doubleheader
as the first three batters to the plate to start the game reached. Holt
led off the game with a walk and scored all the way from first on an RBI
double to the gap in left center by Cardullo. After a wild pitch moved
Cardullo to third, he scored a batter later on a base hit back up the
middle by McGee.
Sitz worked around a leadoff double by John Spatola, an error and a
bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second as he got Garrett Smith to
fly out to Ramsey in right for the final out of the inning to maintain
FSU’s lead at 2-0.
A five-run fourth extended FSU’s lead to 7-0 as the Seminoles registered
back-to-back-back home runs from Holt, Cardullo and McGee.
Jayce Boyd got things going with an infield single to short and moved to
second as the throw from Brad Zapenas short hopped Eagle first baseman
Mickey Wiswall. After a sacrifice bunt by Devon Travis moved Boyd to
third, Rafael Lopez brought him home on a sac-fly to right. The Garnet
and Gold then put together a little two-out rally as the next four
Seminole batters reached including the string of three consecutive home
runs. Ramsey drew a walk, stole second and moved to third on the errant
throw by the Eagle catcher on the steal attempt. But the error would
have no bearing on the outcome of the inning as Holt stroked a 1-1 pitch
from BC starter John Leonard (2-2) over the fence in left. The home run
was his second of the afternoon and team leading 11th of the season.
Cardullo and McGee then followed with back-to-back solo shots to left
center. Cardullo’s home run was his third of the weekend and fifth of
the season, while McGee hit his 11th to tie Holt for the team lead.
The Eagles pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the
Seminole lead to 7-1. Back-to-back singles by Matt Watson and Anthony
Melchionda put runners at the corners to start the inning. Mike Sudol
brought home Watson on a sac-fly left. Following a single up the middle
by Zapenas, Sitz got out of the inning recording consecutive fly outs.
A BC error in the fifth led to two runs for the Seminoles as FSU
extended its lead to 9-1. After drawing a walk to lead off the inning,
Sherman Johnson scored on a fielding error by Wiswall at first. Travis
singled in the inning and scored on a sac-fly by Ramsey.
The Eagles plated a pair of runs in the sixth on a two-run home run by
Sudol. Melchionda led off the inning with a double to right center and
scored as Sudol drilled a 3-2 pitch from Sitz inside the right field
foul pole for his fifth home run of the season.
After Sitz turned in six solid innings in game two, Tyler Everett
entered out of the bullpen to start the seventh. The Eagles scored three
runs off the junior right hander before Martin went to the bullpen and
called on Geoff Parker. Parker got the Noles out of the jam recording
the final two outs to maintain FSU’s lead at 9-6. Spatola and Melchionda
registered RBI singles, while Sudol accounted for the third run of the
inning on an RBI groundout to second.
The Seminoles responded with two runs in the eighth to push their lead
back to five at 11-6. Lopez led off the inning with a walk and scored on
a two-run home run by Ramsey. The sophomore right fielder went opposite
field on the first pitch from Dave Laufer for his fifth home run of the
season.
Florida State returns to the diamond on Wednesday, May 12 as the
Seminoles travel south to DeLand, Fla., to face Stetson at 6:00 p.m. The
