| Seminoles
struggle in Chapel Hill |

After the highs of last night, the emotional rollercoaster rumbled
downwards on Saturday.
Florida State fell to the Tar Heels of North Carolina 10-4 in a
performance that left a lot to be desired. The Seminoles committed two
defensive errors in the field, and at the plate struck out nine times
and left eight runners on base.
“You really have to credit North Carolina in the way that they bounced
back today,” said head coach Mike Martin. “That was an excellent
performance by their entire ball club; Bates threw very well for them.
You just have to give them all the credit today.”
Tyler Holt had a great showing out of the leadoff spot going a perfect
1-for-1 with an RBI, scored twice, stole two bases, and walked three
times.
Sherman Johnson was the only Seminole to collect a multi-hit performance
in his 2-for-4 effort. Johnson came tallied with a two out, RBI double
in the first inning to go along with his single in the fourth.
Starting pitcher John Gast who has been much improved of late, struggled
en route to his first blemish on the 2010 season. Gast allowed five
runs, all earned over six hits, walked three and hit a batter while
striking out three in his four and one-thirds innings pitched.
With the loss, Gast’s record now sits at 3-1 for the season.
Tyler Everett struggled with his location throughout his two innings
pitched, but wasn’t given any help defensively when the opportunities
arose to escape from jams. Out of the three runs charged to Everett,
only one was earned.
Everett walked three, struck out one, and allowed one hit in his 12
batters faced.
Towering reliever Hunter Scantling had much the same fate giving up two
unearned runs on two hits and walked a batter in his one-third of an
inning.
Former closer Andrew Durden performed well when given the ball in the
eighth setting down the Tar Heels in order. Durden also notched a
strikeout.
Florida State will still have a chance to take the series in Chapel Hill
tomorrow as Geoff Parker squares off against right hander Patrick
Johnson in the rubber match. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and
is a “get away” game for Florida State. |
