Gilmartin Paces FSU To Road Win

Seventh-ranked Florida State (23-7, 8-5 ACC) began its second road trip to the Carolinas on the right foot defeating Wake Forest (10-22, 2-11 ACC) 10-1 Friday evening on Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Seminoles tied a season-high with three home runs while capturing their sixth straight win over the Demon Deacons.

“It was a well played ball game, we didn’t make an error, Gilly pitched great,” said head coach Mike Martin. “It was a great win for us. Nothing is easy especially on the road; outstanding job on our guys part.”

Sean Gilmartin moved to 5-2 on the year as he held the Deacs to just one run on two hits in 7.0 innings of work. After giving up a run in the first, the sophomore southpaw allowed just three base runners over the next six innings with no runners advancing past first base. At one stretch, Gilmartin retired 10 straight Wake Forest batters as he finished the evening with six strikeouts.

“My main focus going out there tonight was to work both parts of the plate, especially the inside corner,” said Gilmartin. “I was pleased with the way I threw tonight.”

“Gilly was lights out tonight,” added Devon Travis. “He came out throwing strikes and did a great job for us.”

Hunter Scantling pitched a perfect eighth with one strikeout, while Andrew Durden worked around a two-out bases loaded jam in the ninth striking out pinch hitter Trenton Langston for the final out of the game.

Tyler Holt paced the Seminole offense on Friday night going 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI. Holt, Devon Travis and Parker Brunelle were responsible for the three home runs in game one. Brunelle finished the game with a pair of hits, while Jayce Boyd and Brunelle each scored two runs.

The Seminoles got a run in the first on a pair of doubles from Holt and Mike McGee. Holt led off the game lacing his team leading 10th double of the season to the gap in left center off Wake starter Michael Dimock (1-6). Two batters later he would come around to score on a double to the same exact spot off the bat of McGee for a 1-0 lead.

The lead was quickly erased as Wake Forest tied the game at one on a two-out RBI single up the middle from Mike Murray. Ryan Semeniuk drew a one-out walk from Gilmartin and moved into scoring position after swiping second. Semeniuk would come around to score on Murray’s bounding ball back up the middle.

FSU answered with three runs in the second to retake the lead at 4-1. All three runs came off home runs as the Seminoles went deep twice in an inning for the fifth time this year. Justin Gonzalez got things started with a base hit to center and scored on Travis’ first collegiate home run. The freshman second baseman went opposite field on a 0-1 pitch from Dimock to give the Seminoles a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, Brunelle left the park sneaking a 0-2 pitch just inside the right field foul pole for his third home run of the season.

“Certainly, when we had that three-run inning, it was big for us,” added Martin. “When you give Gilly a three-run lead, you certainly feel better about the situation at hand. He took advantage of it, hit his spots real well.”

The Seminoles wasted very little time putting runners on base in the fourth as the first three batters reached on just three pitches thrown by Dimock. Boyd led off the inning with a double that one bounced the wall in straight away center and moved to third as Brunelle found the hole in between the pitcher’s mound and third on a bunt single. Holt followed with a single through the left side scoring Boyd. An errant throw by Murray from behind the plate, trying to pick off Brunelle at second went into centerfield, allowing both Seminole runners to advance 90 feet. The error would cost the Deacs as both Brunelle and Holt scored on back-to-back RBI groundouts off the bat of Sherman Johnson and McGee.

“He threw me a spinning pitch away and I put a good swing on it,” said Travis. “The wind caught it and took it out of the park.”

After issuing a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the third, Gilmartin found his groove retiring 10 straight Demon Deacon hitters before giving up a single to Steven Brooks with two outs in the sixth. The southpaw got out of the inning unscathed getting Murray to fly out to McGee for the third out of the inning.

Florida State pushed across a run in the seventh to increase its lead to 8-1. The Seminoles loaded the bases on back-to-back walks to Johnson and McGee and a single to left by James Ramsey chasing Dimock from the game. Gabe Feldman entered for the Deacs and got Stephen Cardullo to ground into a double play. Johnson scored on the play for the eighth Seminole run of the game.

Holt finished the scoring on Friday night connecting on his team leading sixth home run of the season. With Boyd on at first after leading off the top of the eighth with a walk, Holt unloaded on a 1-2 pitch to deep left center off Wake Forest reliever Alex Wiesner. The home run set a season-high for Holt.

“It is always good,” added Gilmartin on starting the road trip off with a victory. “Getting that first win is huge.”
