FSU hammered again, drops series to BC

Sixth-ranked Florida State (7-5, 1-2 ACC) fell to Boston College (10-3, 2-1 ACC) 12-5 on Sunday as the Eagles won the season series taking two-of-three games from the Seminoles. The series loss marks the first time in school history that Florida State has dropped an ACC series opener, a span covering 18 seasons.

Boston College held Florida State to just five run on seven hits as Chris Kowalski (2-0) came out of the bullpen for the second time in the series and kept the Seminole bats at bay. The junior right hander silenced the Seminoles over 3.1 innings of work on Sunday allowing just one run and one walk, while striking out three to pick up his second win of the year.

Tony Sanchez and Mickey Wiswall once again led the offensive power for the Eagles registering three hits a piece. Sanchez went 3-for-3 with a double, four RBI and three walks as the junior catcher reached base on all six plate appearances.

For the Seminoles, Tyler Holt finished the series finale with three hits in five at-bats. He also scored a pair of runs. Jason Stidham and Ohmed Danesh each registered two RBI.

Boston College threatened in the top of the first with a pair of singles and a walk off Gast but two big defensive plays kept the Eagles off the scoreboard. With runners on at first and second, Wiswall sent a base hit through the right side of the infield. Robbie Anston tried to score from second on the play but D’Vontrey Richardson sent a bullet to Rafael Lopez at the plate to get Anston for the second out of the inning. Gast then picked off Wiswall at first for the final out of the inning.

The Eagles broke through with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead. BC started the inning with three consecutive hits scoring the first run of the game on an RBI double to left center off the bat of Garret Smith. Designated hitter Matt Hamlet scored after leading off the inning with a single to left. After an intentional walk to Sanchez loaded the bases for the second time in the inning, Wiswall brought home Anston on an RBI groundout to first. Smith scored the third run of the inning as Mike Belfiore sent a grounder to third. Stephen Cardullo could not handle the throw from Tapley allowing Belfiore to reach safely. The Seminoles escaped without further damage recording a fielder’s choice ground out and a fly out.

The Seminoles came right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a one-run lead. The first three batters to the plate in the third reached courtesy of a leadoff walk by Lopez, a single to right by Holt and a walk to Tommy Oravetz. Two batters later, Stidham stepped in and slammed a double off the fence in right scoring Lopez and Holt. Then with two outs, Danesh gave the Seminoles their first lead of the game on a two-run single to right. The hit by Danesh ended the afternoon for BC starter Mike Dennhardt. Dennhardt lasted just 2.2 innings giving up four runs on four hits.

The lead was short lived as Boston College stormed back with four runs in the top of the fourth to regain the lead at 7-4. Back-to-back walks and a fielding error by Stidham at short ended the afternoon for Gast after 3.1 innings of work.

Ben Francis came on to face Sanchez, who took the first pitch he saw from the Seminole right hander, down the line in right for a two-run double.

The Seminole went to the bullpen for the second time in the inning bringing on freshman Brian Busch. The southpaw gave up an RBI single to Wiswall and then an infield single to Belfiore before registering a fielder’s choice groundout and a caught stealing to end the inning.

The Eagles would maintain their three-run advantage until adding two in the eighth and three more in the ninth to take a commanding 12-4 lead.

Florida State looked to get on the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth putting a pair of runners on, but it was the Eagle bullpen that had the upper hand. With runners on first and second and one out in the seventh, BC called on right hander Matt Brazis to induce a fly out off the bat of Mike McGee before calling on left hander Matt O’Brien to get Stidham to fly out to center.

In the eighth, Cardullo and Richardson reached on a walk and a hit-by-pitch with two outs. BC called on relief ace, Mike Belfiore, to face pinch hitter Jack Posey. Belfiore got Posey swinging on strikes to end the threat.

The Seminoles would add one more in the ninth as Holt, who led off the inning with his third single of the game, scored on a Belfiore wild pitch.

The loss drops Florida State to 44-7 all-time in opening ACC play since joining the league back in 1992.

Florida State returns to the diamond for a pair of mid-week games at home on Tuesday and Wednesday against High Point. First pitch for both games is set for 6:00 p.m. Tuesday’s game will air live on Sun Sports, while Wednesday’s game will air live over the internet on ACC Select.
