FSU bats come alive late to down Wolfpack

Florida State (23-12, 10-7 ACC) scored six runs over the last three innings to break a 3-3 tie en route to a 9-3 victory over NC State (19-19, 7-12 ACC) Friday night on Doak Field inside Dail Park. The Seminoles out hit the Wolfpack 10-8 in game one as it marked the third straight victory for FSU over the Pack.

Tyler Holt paced the Seminole offense on Friday night with four hits including two singles, a double and a triple. Mike McGee collected a pair of hits and drove in three runs marking his third multi-RBI game in the last four. Stuart Tapley reached double-digit home runs in the win as the sophomore third baseman hit a solo shot in the ninth for his tenth of the season. Tapley finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. The Seminoles also set a season-high with six stolen bases.

With the win and a Clemson and Boston College loss earlier today, the Seminoles moved into sole possession of first place in the ACC Atlantic Division.

Sean Gilmartin (7-1) picked up his league leading seventh win of the season as the freshman southpaw worked 6.2 innings allowing three runs on seven hits. After giving up a run in each of the first three innings, Gilmartin settled down allowing just two hits the rest of the way before departing with two outs in the seventh. He set the Wolfpack down in order in the fourth and sixth innings and finished the game with five strikeouts.

“I wasn’t able to control the fastball as well as I wanted to tonight,” said Gilmartin. “Tonight was one of those nights that I didn’t have everything going for me. I had to compete with what I had and I was able to do that for six plus innings. Once I knew I didn’t have my good stuff tonight, I just had to bear down and work that much harder.”

The Seminole bullpen was solid in the win as three relief pitchers (Geoff Parker, John Gast and Tyler Everett) combined for 2.1 shutout innings. The trio gave up only one hit, while combining for three strikeouts.

Florida State grabbed the early lead on Friday night as Holt led off the game with a triple off the wall in left, good for his second triple of the season. He scored two batters later on a double down the line in left by McGee. The hit pushed McGee’s hit streak to a career-best eight games.

The Wolfpack came right back with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one. After starting the game with a strikeout, Gilmartin loaded the bases giving up a double to the gap in left center to Devon Cartwright and then consecutive walks to Drew Poulk and Pratt Maynard. Russell Wilson followed with a fielder’s choice groundout to third driving in Cartwright for the first NC State run of the game. Gilmartin was able to get out of the inning without further damage as Chris Schaeffer grounded out to Tapley at third.

NC State took its only lead of the game in the bottom of the second courtesy of a solo home run off the bat of third baseman Andrew Ciencin. Ciencin went deep over the 20 foot wall in left on a 2-1 offering from Gilmartin for his second home run of the season. The Wolfpack looked to add to their lead with two outs putting runners at the corners, but the Seminole starter got Drew Poulk looking on strikes for the final out of the inning.

The Seminoles regained the lead at 3-2 plating a pair of runs in the top of the third. Holt started the inning with his second hit in as many at-bats lacing the first pitch he saw from NC State starter Jimmy Gillheeney (5-2) to left. After a walk to Stephen Cardullo, both runners advanced 90 feet on a stolen base. Holt and Cardullo scored on back-to-back sac-flies by McGee and Jason Stidham, respectively, to give the Garnet and Gold the one run advantage.

Consecutive two out doubles by the Wolfpack in the bottom of the third tied the game at 3-3. Schaeffer hit a double down the line in left and scored one batter later on Pat Ferguson’s RBI double to left.

NC State once again put runners at the corners with two outs on Gilmartin in the fifth, but the Moorpark, Calif., native got out of the inning unscathed inducing an inning ending ground out to second off the bat of Ferguson.

The Seminoles threatened with two outs in the sixth but were unable to capitalize as Gillheeney got Oravetz to groundout to second to keep the game tied at three. After Gillheeney registered two quick outs, FSU extended the inning as Tapley recorded a strikeout but reached on a passed ball. Posey followed with walk.

FSU went out in front for the third and final time on Friday evening as McGee drove in his third run of the game on an RBI infield single in the seventh. With runners at second and third and two outs, McGee ripped a 0-1 offering off the body of Gillheeney driving in Ohmed Danesh from third to give the Seminoles a 4-3 lead. Danesh led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Holt single to left, his third hit of the game. The Seminoles would then successfully executed their second double steal of the game as this time Holt and Danesh took second and third, respectively.

NC State once again put a runner in scoring position in the seventh as Drew Poulk registered a one out double down the line in left. A strike out to Maynard closed the book on Gilmartin as the Seminoles went to the bullpen brining on Geoff Parker. After a walk to pinch hitter John Gianis, Parker closed out the inning getting Schaeffer to ground into a fielder’s choice putout at third.

The Seminoles created some breathing room in the eighth scoring four runs to push their lead to 8-3. Tapley got things going with a double to left and scored two batters later on an RBI single down the first base line by Tommy Oravetz. D’Vontrey Richardson entered the game as a pinch runner for Oravetz and scored on a double to right off the bat of Holt. The final two runs scored on a throwing error by Dallas Poulk as the Wolfpack shortstop threw high over to first on a groundball off the bat of Cardullo.

FSU’s lead grew to 9-3 thanks to Tapley’s 10th home run of the season. The Orlando, Fla., native connected on a solo shot out to left in the ninth to give the Seminoles a six-run advantage.

Gast pitched the eighth and faced four batters. He struck out the first batter that he faced while giving up an infield single. Everett entered in the ninth and pitched a perfect inning recording a pair of strikeouts to close out the game.

Florida State and NC State return to the diamond for game two of a three game series on Saturday, April 18 with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s game will air live ACC Select.
