| FSU routs NC State for the sweep |
FSU Sports Info
|
Florida State (25-12, 12-7 ACC) completed
the sweep of NC State (19-21, 7-14 ACC) with a 13-2 victory Sunday
afternoon on Doak Field inside Dail Park. The 20th-ranked Seminoles
scored 10 of the 13 runs on two outs in the series finale to register
the second conference sweep of the season for the Garnet and Gold.
The series sweep was the first over the Wolfpack since 2002 and sixth
since Florida State joined the ACC in 1992. It marked the third sweep
for the Seminoles over NC State in Raleigh and fifth series victory for
the Seminoles on the Pack’s home turf.
Mike McGee went six innings on Sunday to run his record to 3-2 on the
year. After giving up two runs in the first, the sophomore right hander
settled down nicely blanking the Wolfpack over the next five innings.
McGee scattered just three hits over six innings as he walked four and
struck out five.
McGee also led the Seminole offense on Sunday with three hits as he
scored three times and drove in a run. Jack Posey and Ohmed Danesh each
registered two hits and two RBI. Tyler Holt reached base on five of his
six plate appearances as the sophomore centerfielder walked three times,
was hit by a pitch and reached on a fielding error. Holt and Stuart
Tapley tied McGee with a game-high three runs in the win.
Florida State took advantage of an early Wolfpack error to plate the
first run of the game. Holt led off Sunday’s series finale reaching on a
two base fielding error by Devon Cartwright in left field. He would
score two batters later on an RBI single to left by McGee.
NC State answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the first to
take a one run lead. McGee got off to a good start striking out the
first two Wolfpack batters, but Cartwright, the second strikeout victim
of the inning, reached on a wild pitch. The wild pitch would come back
to haunt the Seminoles as Cartwright scored a batter later on a double
to the gap in left center by Pratt Maynard. A second wild pitch moved
Maynard to third and he later scored on Drew Poulk’s sac-fly to right.
A walk to NC State’s John Gianis to start the bottom of second went by
the way side as McGee settled in and retired the next three batters to
keep the Wolfpack lead at 2-1.
The Seminoles sent 11 batters to the plate in the third scoring five
runs to retake the lead at 6-2. Florida State benefited from five walks
in the inning while registering three hits. Holt walked twice, one to
start the third and the other with the bases loaded to drive in a run.
Jason Stidham began the scoring spree bringing home Holt on a sac-fly to
left. The other four runs came on two outs as Posey and Danesh
registered RBI singles prompting a Wolfpack pitching change.
NC State starter Cory Mazzoni (1-5) lasted just 2.2 innings allowing six
runs, five earned, on four hits. He struck out one and walked three in
his fourth start of the season.
Jake Kensmoe entered and walked both batters he faced before giving way
to Sam Brown, the third NC State pitcher to make an appearance in the
inning. Parker Brunelle drove in a run drawing a bases loaded walk off
Kensmoe, while Holt followed with a bases loaded walk off Brown.
Florida State added to its lead in the fourth once again converting on a
two-out opportunity. Tapley and Posey reached on consecutive
hit-by-pitches leading to another Wolfpack pitching change. Grant Sasser
came on and gave up an RBI double down the line in right to Danesh on
the very first pitch scoring Tapley to give FSU a 7-2 lead.
The Wolfpack loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. FSU was able
to get out of the jam without NC State scoring a run as Brian Bello
lined into an inning ending double play. Bello scorched a line drive off
the bat to third but the ball went right into the glove of Tapley, who
then threw on to Stidham at second for the double play.
The Seminoles pushed their lead to 9-2 with two more two-out runs. Holt
reached as he was hit by a pitch and then took second on his second
stolen base of the game. After a walk to McGee, Stidham brought home
Holt on a single through the right side of the infield. McGee scored the
second run of the inning courtesy of a throwing error at short. Dallas
Poulk threw wildly over to first on a ground ball off the bat of Tapley
allowing McGee to cross the plate.
NC State once again threatened in the fifth putting runners on at the
corners with only one out but came up empty handed. After giving up a
walk and a single, McGee struck out pinch hitter Domonique Rodgers and
then got Pat Ferguson to line out to Stephen Cardullo at short.
FSU pushed its lead to 12-2 with three runs in the seventh. Posey
knocked in his second run of the game singling to right with the bases
loaded to plate McGee. Two batters later, James Ramsey continued the
Seminoles success with two outs singling to center off Zak Sinclair to
drive in Stidham and Tapley.
The Seminoles rounded out the scoring in the ninth as Cardullo hit a
two-out double to the gap in right center scoring D’Vontrey Richardson,
who was hit-by-pitch to start the inning. Pinch hitter Sean Gilmartin
reached base as he drew a two out walk.
The Florida State bullpen kept the Wolfpack scoreless over the final
three innings. Mark Peterson worked a perfect seventh in facing just
three batters. Posey pitched the eighth, while Bo O’Dell closed out the
game facing four batters in the ninth.
Florida State will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 21 as the
Seminoles host UNC Asheville for a pair of mid-week games on Mike Martin
Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. Tuesday’s game marks the first of 10
consecutive home games for the Seminoles as first pitch against the
Bulldogs is slated for 6:00 p.m. The game will air live over the
internet on ACC Select. Fans can listen to the action locally on 1270
the Team and over the internet on www.seminoles.com. Live stats will
also be available via gametracker.
